I Wasn’t Always a Lawyer
When I was 16, I was convinced I was going to be a mechanic.
I pursued that career until the age about 18, when the very nice owner of the shop where I was working, in the nicest way possible, told me I was the worst mechanic he had ever seen and that I should pursue another career. A tough thing to say to me and one that I have come to really appreciate.
How I Got Into Law
There I met the man who would change my life.
His name was Bernie Cravath. He was one of the owners of the company, an attorney, and a prince of a guy.
Bernie became my mentor, he had a biting wit, direct way of speaking and an honesty about him that, in some ways I believe, I have patterned myself after. He could be tough and he did not suffer fools gladly, but he did put up with me and cared about me and people in a way that few do. He would involve me in real estate deals that had a legal flavor to them.
At some point, I turned to Bernie and said, “Bernie I’m thinking about becoming a lawyer. What do you think?”
Bernie looked at me and said he thought I should do it. He thought I would be a very good lawyer.
At the same time I started complaining about how hard it would be; I said, “Bernie it will take me five years to become an attorney. I have to finish college, I have to go to law school, and I have a kid on the way.”
He then gave me the advice that I have not forgotten in over 20 years. He said, “Dave, five years is going to go by whether you do something with your life and become the thing that you’re supposed to be or not.”
I was smart enough to take that advice from a guy who was just looking out for me. He then helped get me into Catholic University Law School and vouched for me to the school.
The rest is history.
I Offer Something Other Lawyers Can’t
If you have a car accident, my background as a mechanic often comes in handy. If you have an injury at work in the construction field and otherwise, I know about that too. Also, my brother is a doctor, so medical malpractice cases, nursing home cases, and any other health related issues that come up in cases I have the answer merely by picking up the phone.
More than anything in my background it is the example set by Bernie Cravath that guides me… protect the weak, be honest, look people in the eye, work hard, do your best, open doors for ladies, fight the good fight, and finally reach down and help the next guy up without thought of benefit to yourself.
