John Lancaster
brother.
JOHN LANCASTER: That’s true.
DW: I’ll tell you how that happened. A couple years back – how many years has it been now?
JL: It’s been seven years.
DW: Okay. Seven years ago, John was accused of assaulting a police officer, and his
grandmother hired me to defend him. So we went to court, and – how many witnesses did they
have? How many police officer witnesses?
JL: There were five or six.
DW: Okay. John, were you a little nervous?
JL: I was very nervous.
DW: Yeah, he was.
JL: Yes.
DW: Was I nervous?
JL: No, you didn’t seem nervous at all.
DW: That’s because, no matter what happened, I was going to get to go home. But anyway
[Laughter] – so, the first four witnesses, the first four police officers went up, and what did they
say?
JL: Well the first four officers went up on the stand, and said that I assaulted one of their fellow
officers.
DW: How’d you do it?
JL: They said that I ran him over with my car.
DW: Okay. And is that what had happened?
JL: No, that’s not what happened at all.
DW: It was an accident, right?
JL: Yes, it was an accident, caused by them.
DW: Okay. So, in other words, your car rolled over his foot, right?
JL: That’s what happened. My car rolled over one of the officers’ legs.
DW: You told me that in the very beginning, right?
JL: Yes, I told you that. That I never intended to hurt anyone at all.
DW: Okay, and did I believe you?
JL: Yes, you did.
DW: Actually, no, I didn’t. [Laughter] Sorry. [Laughter] I just told you I believed you, but I really
didn’t. So anyway, so then, finally the police office that was actually injured got up on the
stand, and shocked both of us by getting up and saying it was an accident and the car had rolled
over his foot. Right?
JL: Yes, one officer actually got on the stand and told the truth. He was honest.
DW: And the judge threw the case out, right?
JL: The judge threw the case out after that.
DW: And so then, John – I don’t know how it occurred. Either I called John or you called me.
John, I think – my recollection is John would call me, like, about, like, educational things,
“Should I go back to college? Should I–“, you know?
JL: Yes, yes.
DW: For some reason, John felt like I knew the answers.
JL: Well, after the case, Dave became a very important resource tool in my life, and I could talk
to him about anything, and so our relationship started there and now we’re here.
DW: Right. And I would, like, also help John with his basketball game, because it’s
acknowledged that I’m a better basketball player than John.
JL: I would also, in return, help Dave with coordinating some of his clothes.
DW: So, you’re going to take responsibility for this?
JL: We’re improving.
DW: Well, thanks, John. Thanks for being here.
