Signs of Nursing Home Abuse or Neglect

If you have a loved one you’ve entrusted into the care of a nursing home, you need to understand and recognize the signs of nursing home abuse or neglect.

When you’re talking to or visiting your loved ones, always be on the lookout for:

  • Conditions in the nursing home that are either unsanitary or not up to reasonable standards of cleanliness.
  • Infected bed sores, pressure ulcers, or other open wounds, no matter how minor.
  • Sudden onset of fear or exaggerated anxiety that may be uncharacteristic of the patient.
  • Unexplained injuries, sprains, cuts, bruises, or broken bones.
  • Incorrectly administered medications.
  • Improper nutrition, poor diet, or dehydration.
  • Untimely, sudden, or unexpected death.

Most importantly, if you hear complaints or concerns about abuse or neglect, listen.

The first step is to notice the signs of abuse or neglect. The next step is to take action.

How Prevalent is Nursing Home Abuse?

Abuses suffered by elderly patients in nursing homes take many forms including physical abuse, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, financial abuse, and negligence.

In the U.S., surveys estimate that as many as 1 in 6 seniors have endured abuse from their caregivers.

These patients are 3 times as likely to die within the three years following their abuse than their unabused peers.

To make matters worse, up to 44% of residents living in nursing homes reported that they had suffered abuse or neglect, and as much as 95% said they had witnessed abuse.
